I would get one of the TV USB light strips and jus open it up and put the strip inside to light it.

Yeah. It's possible. I have added lights to a few IM figure bases. The sky is the limit depending on what you want, but an 8" strip of LED lights, a 9V batter and a switch are all you need.
The whole thing comes apart with screws from below, so just open it up and have a look.
