Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

Likewise. And it will. This movie, and especially this character need some 1/6 love.

Absolutely. :lecture

Honestly, I'm baffled by the lack of officially licensed merch for this movie. Makes absolutely no sense to me.

My dream is to have Quint, Brody and Hooper in HT-quality ... and then I'll pick up one of Shark City Ozark's 1/6 Bruce heads.

Then I could die a happy collector.

The fan base is smaller than could probably support most mass production companies, Sideshow's maquette was available for years after realease and often had to be given away as a prize in the newsletter. Companies like Shark City Ozark offering highliy expensive short runs are the only way to meet the market.

You'll also never see anything based on the cast because JAWS was well before film marketing took off, and actors weren't signed to merchandising contracts so likeness rights don't exist, and Shaw and Scheider are dead so any company looking to use their likeness would have to go through an estate, if that's even an option, to get approval, spend extra costs.

JAWS is a popular film whose fan base really craves merchandise, but isn't large enough to support and justify expenses to produce the sorts of products they're after.

Oh, what you say makes perfect sense. And that makes me sad. :monkey2

(Though I wouldn't think dealing with an estate would necessarily be any more or less expensive than dealing with a living actor when it comes to getting likeness rights.)

I'm not asking for ultra mass market stuff, but I think a limited run of some high-end figures would sell. They'd never do Iron Man sales numbers, of course, but who knows. That HT Godfather figure sold pretty well, after all.

(Yeah, that Sideshow maquette did hang around for years, but I don't think that was entirely a fanbase issue. Weren't folks generally not in love with that statue? I love mine, but I seem to remember folks being disappointed.)

Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

Sad but true. Forget Jaws. Only avengers and iron man and superman and batman and on and on and on. And yes I refuse to even bother capitalizing or italicizing their titles. So there!

The maquette has been criticized, there are features there are wrong and impact the overall look if you want to be really accurate to Bruce's design. More people support the Shark City Ozark maquettes but I personally feel like those have things off with them as well. I actually feel that what Sidsehow did right, SCO did wrong and likewise. I love the maquette though, even if some parts are off, it's a really good depection and presentation, love the base.

As far as paying an estate over a living actor, it wouldn't necessarily be different cost by nature, but just getting approval to make any deal my be harder depending on how the estate feels about treating the deceased. You could probably get Scheider's as his SeaQuest DSV figure bore his likeness, at least to the best of Playmates abilities. Shaw, who knows.

There could also be challenges just with Universal, I feel like their licenses can be complicated. Outside of children's toys, Jurassic Park is a license that doesn't even need likeness rights but isn't overly marketed. Again, looking at Sideshow, they dropped the license to pursue their own non-licensed dinosaur line. Sure, anything done in-house will be cheaper than paying a license holder, but as popular as the Winston JP designs are, you gotta imagine the gain vs. the cost on that line wasn't worthwhile.

Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

I always got the impression that there was also some sort of bad blood between Sideshow and Universal, too. They've scrubbed all of the pieces they did for Universal off their site, including the Bruce maquette and all the Universal Monsters. They're not even archived anymore. That struck me as more than losing the license ... that smelled like there were lawyers involved.

I do believe it may go beyond Sideshow though, I remember hearing about issues with Licensing for Scarface. Sure products keep hitting shelves, but perhaps Universal is hard to work with and that's why we only see limited products and of certain types.

I just wish there were more licensed pieces even just based on the shark. SCO's pieces are nice buy very pricey because of how they're made. I remember for a long time the McFarlane diorama was the closest thing to a collectible of Bruce, I was so excited when the Sideshow maquette came out and it was a full statue of just the shark.

I still find it funny that the oldest JAWS robot stands up as the best looking and most realistic even though the later ones had the benefit of money and technological advances, and I'd pit Bruce against even the best CGI sharks. They did a hell of a job on him. I hope the efforts to obtain and create a full replica of him from the only remaining parts in that junkyard will be successful so maybe one day I can go into a museum or whatever and see a full size Bruce.

Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

Hear hear.

:lecture:exactly:

Didn't Greg Nicotero & Co. do a replica head for Jawsfest a couple years ago?

A full, nose-to-tail replica that you could walk all the way around would be phenomenal!

That's a museum I would visit regularly!

Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

hi guys, my stand in quint until i get trevors painted, still a real good quint if you ask me,,, anyhow here is my real metal and wood speargun quint used, it even comes apart like the real gun.. done by davinator's guy, also had the 3 barrells done..i am going to have the pulpit done when quint shoots the shark and hooper is tying the ropes on...as you can see i am sparing no expense when it comes to jaws,. my top 5 of all time, seen it 25 times at least. if your wondering the gun is very expensive to have made, the barrells were reasonable. i also had quints machete made, real steel and wood again with the blade between the wood handles with rivets, just awesome work..

Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

My only suggestion is water down the clothes on him, then he'll look better.

Re: 1/6 JAWS Quint Sculpt?

Any interest in a Quint with grimacing/getting eaten face? I'm planning to display with the SCO final battle shark, so I'd prefer it.

I think most people would prefer a "normal" expression. Maybe I'm wrong, it would definitely make for a cool "DX" alternate sculpt.
