Hey everyone... just kicking around ideas as I am working on some other custom projects, and I got to thinking... no proper Doc Ock figure ever released in the past. I know it's a bit older now, but the character was fantastic in Spiderman 2. I have some ideas for the tentacles and how to get them to be poseable.

Updates....

It would be very sweet. I also imagine very very expensive though.

Yes possibly expensive! I was debating on whether to start an interest thread with NO information on cost, as I have not yet mocked up in 3D my plans for the tentacles. However I enjoy doing this as a hobby whether or not others are interested, so I was planning on starting a 3D model to start gauging possible costs. I will currently keep this thread going with updates as I go along.

I also figured the tentacles would be the hardest part, while the rest would be relatively simple... the look in the movie I am going after he wears no shirt, basic pants, and a long trench coat. Clothes and a decent head sculpt and there ya go... easy peasy:rotfl

I only have the figure from the Amazing Spiderman. Still, if done well I would love to add this to my collection. If there were reasonable payment plans I'd definitely be in.

How about the green meanie?

Green Goblin? I guess I thought Hot Toys had already made him... guess I was wrong. Also, I didn't think his design from the Spiderman 1 film was very popular, whereas I thought most people were pretty happy with the design of Doc Ock.

And I know this sounds crazy, but I actually feel it would be easier to design Doc Ock's tentacles with what I have in mind than to develop a whole set of Green Goblin armor/clothing.

A few renders that I just started tonight. These are literally cell phone pics of my screen as I was in a hurry...this is a single link within the tentacles. There are ~40 links total, with six of them being double width links.

Anyway, very early renders but I will work on it more so I can get some idea of pricing.

I would LOVE this.

For the tentacles are you going fully jointed or rubber with a bendy core? Check out the toybiz dock ock 12" figure, I have it and the tentacles are pretty good using that method

Not exactly fully jointed. My general plan is to model individual "links" to the tentacles. These links can then be put onto a central bendable, poseable tube (gosseneck tubing, it's called) which is able to be bent in all directions yet hold its shape AND support weight.... that's what the central hole is for.... and then 3 separate wirse/cors will go through the other 3 holes which will A) provide a realistic look compared to the movie and B) prevent the individual links from spinning around the central axis.

I am not sure if I am explaining it right, but that's the gist. My biggest concern is cost, really... having all the individual links printed is not inexpensive, especially if I want to get the details I am going for. Getting the claws to be openable and poseable is another difficult thing which I haven't exactly conceptualized yet. As I said EXTREMELY early goings, here, but part of the fun is always figuring out how to make my ideas work in the real world.

Ooooh, so it's like a ball and socket system for each individual segment?

I see why it may look like that, but not exactly. What I have done is designed INDIVIDUAL tentacle pieces that are simply connected. Obviously this is problematic as the tentacle could not bend. However, the plastic is really meant to serve as a spacer system. A bendable memory cable (as I mentioned earlier, "gooseneck tubing") will be run through the middle. The plastic spacers will be cut or broken to allow for independent movement of each piece but will remain in the center to keep the individual links separate from each other.

Does that make sense? I am finding it incredibly difficult to explain the image in my mind's eye, haha!

I think I get it, sounds pretty innovative. I'm sure you'll do the design justice. Are you going to sculpt the head in ZBrush? Mudbox?

Haven't gotten that far, haha! Figured the real hard work would be the tentacles. There are three different link types that make up each tentacle. I have one specific link done...it will be super simple to make the other two as they are just slight variations off the one I have done.

Once those are all done I can assemble them into a single tentacle. I will likely get a print of one single tentacle to play around with and ensure my concept will work. Once I'm sure of that I'll move onto the other parts.

So I was able to secure some inexpensive gooseneck tubing to mount the tentacle model around so it can be flexible yet hold it's position. An added benefit I didn't even think of is that gooseneck tubing is hollow inside... that means I could theoretically run wiring through it to make the red light on the inside of the claw light up! Obviously I am not even CLOSE to that point yet but it's nice to know the base is covered if necessary.

I am going to try and work hard to get a full tentacle done soon so I can get a test print made so I can really start messing around with it.

Now that I have more concrete information (though still working on pricing... which unfortunately is likely to be a bit on the higher side) I am also thinking about getting an official interest thread going. Will probably wait till I have more concrete pricing information first, though.

So I finally got the print of one tentacle in...

I think it looks awesome. Next is to implement my idea to make the tentacle mobile and poseable.
