Hey everyone, just wanted to provide a quick update. I am currently talking with Corning (who make the special fiber) trying to learn more about it to determine if it is truly the best material for the project. Though the initial tests I did were extremely promising I have run into a few issues with getting a good, bright, consistent light from the cable.

A little background... this cable is MEANT to be lit with laser light, which gives it a ridiculously awesome looking glow. However, the lasers that are built FOR the wire cost $80 a piece and only come in red/green/blue color. To me this isn't remotely practical. So I did some tests with LED light, which is what you see in the images, and it worked great. However, colored LEDs are much dimmer on average than the white LED of my phone, so I am not getting the "glowing neon" look I want (and assume you guys want to).

SO, I am now talking with the folks that make the fiber and I'll see what I can find out.

IF this fiber is not the answer to this project I have other ideas on how to make it work so fear not. Still having fun with this one and I'll update you all every step of the way as I always do!

PROJECT NOT DEAD. Just a quick little not... I am still working on this. I have begun work on a new technique that could allow me to light this in a way that doesn't have a limited life. I just finished what I consider the hardest part, which is great news... now I just need to test the lighting itself. I will post updates as I always do.

As you may have seen I have gotten very busy on the customs boards but I am still working on this (and the cats) for everyone. If the figure is coming out the end of the month I should have good stuff to show by then no problem!

Hey, guys, there may be a little breakthrough in the laser wire department that could get this going again. The company that makes that awesome wire I showed in the first few posts has a lot of new products available that might allow me to light this sign with an essentially limitless lifespa (unlike the EL wire in the pictures just above).

I am currently communicating with them about what sort of stuff I can use, so stay tuned. I want to make this sign as cheap as possible but, without knowing ANY other details, we're probably looking in the $150-$200 range. Don't quote me on that though as I am still gathering informatio.
