I guess what I’m attracted to and my collecting habits have changed. A couple of years ago I wanted anything and everything meaningful to me represented in 1/6 in my collection. Regardless of how boring or bland, it was all about my connection to the source material. But as time went on I realized it’s all about posibility (for me at least). Once I start getting bored of a fig I switch it up, find a perfect new pose and boom… I’m in love all over again. I’m not a stand guy and I’m not a static pose guy; it doesn't have to be an extra dramatic or extreme pose necessarily, but it does have to be something interesting and have personality. Good accessories and 2nd sculpts are also a big help in adding more posing options and variety
So where I once REALLY wanted things like Dirk Diggler now I say to myself, “for what”? So he can stand there with no accessories in one or two different poses and do absolutely nothing? Even with the best of sculpts and the finest of paint and Kato/Yunsil quality clothes… that will get played after a while. There are things on the blander side that I’ve made exceptions for and things that I still will (like Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, etc.), but I’m starting to desire the Forest Gump type figs a lot less nowadays (although Forest may still be on the exception side of the fence). If I’m not deeply connected enough to the source material to overlook blandness, then a custom fig has to have a fair amount of flavor for it to be worth the $500-$1000 to me and the space it requires.
That said, I’d be all over a Michael & David duo and Born on the 4th Cruise definitely makes the cut!!
Pop!!! We agree! Princess Bride hell yes!!!!!!
This is a really interesting observation. For what it is worth, I have felt the same way: source material overrides how toyetic the figure is. As time has gone on, however, this has proven to not always be so prominent. Figures like the Lethal Weapon guys - actors and characters I love - have grown stale to me, as well as Leon the Professional, a movie that was always in my top 25. At the same time, ultra cool action figures like my HT GI Joe ninjas have also failed to hold interest, with that lackluster movie playing a big role. So I have found myself looking for a blend: fun figures that have a strong personality as well as characters I have a connection to. That being said, I have no interest in stuff like Andy and Red from Shawshank Redemption despite that being one of my favorite movies, yet I am still own RM's Doc Holliday despite being somewhat lukewarm on the film. I adore Dirty Harry and No Country but my VM Harry and RM Anton really do not see a lot of action and get a little stale sometimes. So it definitely depends.
That being said, my thirst for guys like the Heat trio, Axel Foley, and Mad Max are all at their peak, as they perfectly slip into that awesome-looking-yet-also-from-memorable-source-material bracket. And the Princess Bride guys! I'd love Inigo and the Dread Pirate Roberts.
Wasn't the first time brother, and I'm sure it won't be the last :wink1:
ooh hell yes!... please?
