So I love the head but think there were a few paint misses that really could have helped the likeness.
Paint can make or break a likeness even on the best of sculpts. I don't fancy myself a technical expert in painting by any means and there are guys on these forums that can run damn circles around me... Silent surfer is one guy who I think always hits both marks, technique crispness and likeness. That's why he's one of the great masters of this hobby in my book.
But I always knew how to make a likeness, even from my old charcoal portraits as a young kid... So i can usually see what's missing pretty quick. an I think it's the best strength I have in the painting department which I'm always trying to perfect because I can't be bothered to send anything out and wait and pay to a painter these days unless it's someone I'm a huge fan of and want work for my collection. Anyways...
I also am amazed at how so many great painters totally ignore the importance eyebrows. If you don't hit the eyebrows exact, shame density, color, length etc it can totally screw up a likeness.
I actually started to do this before I saw Surfer's but what he did confirmed the issues that I knew were there with the paint.
1) Guiness has huge heavy upper eyelids, the hot toys sculpt got this right
2) all the details are there in the sculpt, but a distinguishing feature of Alec are his eyes, eye bags, etc. I accentuated these
3) I made the corners of the mouth/beard a bit darker which helped widen the mouth. I think this is the biggest issue with the sculpt, mouth is still to narrow
4) I put more brown in the beard in the areas where I needed the white to pop more, like the corners of the goatee area. Instead of adding white I thought this was a better way to go, I have to be honest in saying I think the contest in silentsurfers is just too much. It looses the realism and brings it to a bit of an animated vibe. This is where I think Jnix has the edge overall.
5) Lastly I darkened the eyebrows quite a lot, as soon as that happened the likeness jut popped!
I still think Jnix paint jobs are too shiny but I'm leaving it. I don't mind it for this head for whatever reason, maybe because he seemed sweaty sometimes in the movie. Just like Han... I have the cantina scene tattooed in my mind for ANH and both of these guys and the lighting gave it that effect.
Much like the luke I thought the very nice Jnix paint up totally washed out some of the best details in the sculpt. A lot of the paint jobs are a bit washed out and brown overall
Anyways here are some crappy pics, I'm too damn lazy to get out my SLR these days.. anything I have to bring my computer out for and edit I can't be bothered, but I will definitely post some nicer pics because these don't do justice and I really love this sculpt.
I also always forget to post "before" pics.. It's laziness and forgetfulness but it always pisses me off because I wan them for my own good to see how far along the revisions have brought the sculpt. This was before but hard to see apples to apples because of the different light and angle.
