Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

just wondering, if we pay now is it ready to ship?

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

Some hair mock-ups I've done so far, but as I've said to Frank probably more suitable for the earlier scenes of the film. I may have his hair a little too short on top even for those.

For the One-Man-Army look I would probably keep pretty much the same profile but obviously uncover his ear.

would it be possible to see a painted prototype before paying?

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

thanks for those a-dev much appreciated

Yes, i've asked sean to do a few changes and then when it's ready i'll get a cast painted up to show

It's really hard to pin down his hairline when you're looking at him from the front (real pics of Arnie I mean) but for what it's worth here's my attempt. I think the original is a bit egg-headed so I've squared it off but maybe the hair could be a tad longer aswell, not sure.

As regards the face, I was going through all my Arnie-related saved pics and came across this -

I don't normally encourage using another product as reference (in place of actually looking at pics of the man himself in the movie) but I don't think anyone would be going wrong if they used Sideshow's Dutch (Trevor Grove?) ^ That looks like a fantastic sculpt to my eyes. It appears to nail all his features and the shape of his face and this handily provides a large amount of angles.
The Predator look isn't so far from Commando either, it was only 2 years later, pretty similar hair.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

Aww nice. And that was quick.

Yeah I'd say that improves the back of the head.

I would just suggest these tiny mods to the side of the head as the hairline is maybe a little too sharp there.

Lastly I would say this - I do like the hair being fuller over the ears and overlapping them a bit as it does in the earlier parts of Commando. But by suggesting that I have created a problem where we're blending two different looks from the movie together into one - the fuller hair on the sides from earlier in the film combined with the harsh flat-top that he sports when he goes into battle for the finale.

They need to be separated and perhaps if you guys want you could actually offer 2 different hairstyles for the film.

For the casual-style you'd want to base the top of the hair more on this:

^It's a little bit more messy and less even all around, strands of hair going in different directions and so on.

Whereas for the main combat scenes that the Hot Toys figure is based on you'd want to keep the top of the hair as you have it but uncover the ears again:

^it really looks like John Matrix specifically went and had a haircut before going on his rescue mission.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

Here's a digital coloured one.

We will work on it some more tomorrow :)

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

Those eyes coloured in have suddenly given the likeness another boost.

I'm going to try my hand at a mock-up of completing the casual-hairstyle front view with the messier hair on top.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

My attempt at the casual look:

^^trying to suggest the hair directionality and indentations (to break it up, stop it looking too rounded) with those light brown lines

It should be kept in mind though that I'm not a major Commando fan, frankly I'm not even sure I've ever seen the entire film. So if anyone thinks I'm steering the hairstyles in a completely wrong direction do say so. I always have his T1 and T2 hair on the brain which could be influencing me on this one.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

I've been working on some possible mods to the face, some of it looks messy due to my using Windows Paint and even being somewhat limited at that:

*

And here's a comparison to the most recent sculpt as it stands:

and the one with the slightly raised mouth:

With the change to the eyebrows the eyes themselves might need alteration (possibly moving upwards ever so slightly). I changed the eyebrows because I think they're a bit too 'straight across' and seem to make the face look....flat?

The change to the jawline might affect the profile views but I figure try it and if it throws something out of whack more adjustment could be made.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

The little tweaks make a difference. They bring a little more life to it.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

Nice work & suggestions. Keep it up guys, its shaping up nicely. That eyebrow change suggestion by ADev, I agree with. If that happens, put me on the interest list please.

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

yep got all the notes - thanks a-dev especially!

I'm working on it with sean today so will most likely have something else to show tonight

Re: Commando: John Matrix head sculpt [sdabbs]

Going in the right direction I think. How do the mods affect the other views? Can we see that?

I hope you guys don't mind but I reached out to some others for their opinions. DEATHASYLUM had this to say:

Are they going for the casual look, or one man army for this hs? His hair is a lot shorter at the end of the flick, especially around the ears and back. I would say you're on par to the casual look right now, but it needs to be trimmed up for the geared up look at the end of the movie. Also note, that the latest update is starting to get that mini afro look like the DX 10/13 on the top, so that needs to be avoided at all costs. It looks too nice and compact compared to the sides. I would say the top needs to be broken up a bit and not so flat top looking to work with the longer side hair. I think his cheekbones are a little puffy too and they should be looked at again. Hope that helps a little and good luck

I agree with him that the hair won't be accurate for the combat look - that's my fault as I did moreso look at pics from the casual scenes when doing my hair mods. I still think those were worthwhile but I will also try a mock-up of the military haircut he has at the end.

Any chance for a less passive stare?

Also one of the important aspect f this hs is the size, HT headsculpt is too big for the body any chance to adress this issue?

Thanks for that awesome project
