Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

We mostly do heads from shows we watch and neither of us watched the Shield, so probably not.

If you like Justified and Deadwood, check out The Shield. Great TV, and one of the most satisfying endings to a series I've seen.

Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey gang,

You will be seeing some changes coming up with Warriors Gate Productions as we streamline the way we do things to be able offer more heads per year with greater frequency. Right now my partner in WGP and our lead sculptor, Sean Dabbs, is only able to sculpt for us in his free time as this is a second job. (In his day job he sculpts freelance for McFarlane, Big Chief, etc.) This is why when a WGP interest list “converts” and hits 16 interested it takes us a while to start it. We have tried having him go full time before but we still needed to refine our system a bit more to make it viable.

Sean can sculpt approximately three heads a month depending on what outside jobs he is doing. I would love to be able to have Sean complete at least two new heads a month here. This will have us fly on completing our already converted interest lists that have reached 16 and for our future projects. That would be pretty sweet and would help to really us explore the shows, movies, and universes we are already doing and populate them faster. Imagine a schedule where, say you were a “GOLDEN GIRLS ”or “THE NOTEBOOK” fan and we could offer you multiple character heads from it within the year, perhaps as sets (ex- two heads every three months) on a planned schedule, depending on character interest of course.

We realize we’ve had bugs to work out with our past processes. We are always working behind the scenes to make things run smoother. 2012 was very frustrating with the bottle-necking with casters and the failures with trying new ones. Each head we make will still take an approximate three month course from finished sculpt to release. The difference is we want to start at least sending two new heads at the printer every month so we will be ideally releasing two every month once we get to the point they are being cast.

Our biggest question mark with doing this is insuring actual commitment for a character from the forum after we have expressed interest. We can have 70 people express interest but only half follow through. Clearly that number will get better with a faster turn around and being able to show painted protos through our proto painter Salvador Larroca. What we want to do now, if we have for example 31 people interested in a Kurt Russell “MacCready” from the Thing, is to collect a small $10 “interest” deposit per character before we start to have us begin to insure the interest is really there. This is particularly important with interest lists at lower numbers (Ex: just “16”). Insuring interest is there will help us fly ahead and take on these multiple project with more certainty. The rest of the head payment would be due later on any time after the master is printed through release.

Also, from now on new heads will be offered for only a limited time and will no longer be kept available open ended. We will do second runs only as demand warrants it. We are confident in our abilities. If in the end you are not happy with the head the $10 deposit could instead be applied to a different character deposit for or order.

We have a lot of heads and 1:6 prop items planned for this year. “Converted” interest lists we are moving to complete soon are JUSTIFIED, The THING, Kim Bassinger, Tracey Walters, Margot Kidder, Sarah Douglas, DAWN OF THE DEAD, DEADWOOD, and Leeloo from FIFTH ELEMENT, while other universes we plan to focus a lot on this year are ILLEGAL ALIEN, ILLEGAL ALIENS, and THE STALKING DEAD. This is not a full list of everything we are doing. There will be other projects. This is just the quick bullet points.

We will discuss more of our plans for each universe in their own respective threads.

We would also like to start collecting customer E-mails for a monthly WGP newsletter and themed updates, which we plan to offer some exclusive head sculpts and exclusive deluxe sets through off-forum (and because only being able to PM 5 people at a time here in SSF is a killer! - laugh), so please contact us with your E-mail if you’d like to be included on it. Please send your addresses to sean.dabbsAThotmail.com with WGP newsletter in the title. Please replace AT" with "@"!

Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

JUSTIFIED UPDATE

Raylen's sculpt was assigned three months ago to one of our outside sculptors with the intent he might be done by the current seasons premiere. Then at my first check-in to see how things were going I learned he had gotten into a bad car accident and hadn't been able to start but hoped to start soon. As of the most recent update last night he STILL hasn't started and I REALLLLLY want to apologize and get this rolling.

As you read, my studio partner Sean (and our lead-sculptor) is looking to be devoting his time to sculpting for the forum full time and the very first thing I want him to tackle is JUSTIFIED. This will be all three JUSTIFIED heads at once- Raylen, Raylen hatted, and Boyd.

Like I mentioned above, we just need to insure interest is really there for him to do this and would like to collect a small $10 deposit per JUSTIFIED head just to verify interest. This would go towards the $60 cost of each head.

Just so people know who Sean Dabbs is and can match them up with our work, he's the sculptor who did our Daryl Dixon from Walking Dead, Penguin and Catwoman from Batman Returns, and Bishop our from Aliens.

Please send deposits to sean.dabbsAThotmail.com (replace the "@" with "AT"), and please write what it is a deposit for in the Paypal notes.
At this time we will also be starting the same thing over on our Batman '89 thread for Bassenger and Walters before moving on to our other older interest lists.

Depending on outside workload Sean can usually finish three heads a month so once we have collected the deposits, he has a fast turn around!

Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

Asking for a $10 deposit for a unseen sculpt that might take you god knows how long to make is a big turn off.

Just a suggestion but why not email or pm the people who were interested when a sculpt is ready. I know that I am on a few of your lists but with your casting problems, long production times and a thousand different threads it is just to bothersome to try to keep track of what is available and what is not.

I appreciate the thoughtful comments and feedback! Once Sean begins all three heads should be sculpted in a month. You will see the updates. From there, as mentioned above, it takes about three months to get them in your hands from printing to casting. We have had horrific casting problems with trying new casters last year to ironically make things go faster. They have been fired.

The fee is only $10, and we do not think that is a lot to ask as you are basically commissioning a professional artist who charges $1,000 a sculpt per head for Big Chief, McFarlane, and private commissions and he is taking on three heads at once. That's $30 to hire a $3,000 sculptor if you are interested in all three. As a person who organized lots of group commissions before I formed WGP to get the characters I really wanted made, that isn't a bad deal. And you have seen the quality of his work and are familiar with what he can do. The forum is his portfolio

The flip-side of people not following through for us is worse if he is turning down outside jobs to do these three. If at the end of the day you don't like the sculpt when you see it you don't need to buy it. We are confident in our abilities.

It is a good idea about PMing people when things are done. We can do that. Just as threads can also be subscribed too to read the title updates. Past experience shows it does nothing to effect follow through with anyones interest lists. The problem is interest lists are like "impulse buys" at a grocery store.

Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

Rick, your update sounds like a sensible way for WGP to progress. I've signed up for the newsletter with Sean. I'll have to review my thread subscriptions to see what's what.

Thank you, sir! The newsletter is a great thing to sign up for because there are some characters we want to make that are best left for off-forum communications! :wave

Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

Not trying to rain on anyone's Corn Flakes but isn't it against the rules of this forum to solicit deposits for work that is not yet started? If I'm wrong someone please correct me. The rules about how custom stuff is done are sometimes a little fluid here but I thought you had to be finished with something in order to ask for money for it?

Re: WGP "JUSTIFIED"/"DEADWOOD" Olyphant interest thread

If I read it correctly, this whole new method of doing sculpts will expedite the timing to about a month? Form start until finish, i.e casts ready to ship? If so, then I'll gladly pay the deposit.:)

No, thats incorrect. The turn-around will never be much less than the three month it takes after the sculpting is completed to get a head out. Thats just the length of time it takes between printing, cleaning, a lot of international shipping, and then the final casting.

What I was saying was that as we move forward with being able to sculpt two heads a month on a regular schedule, and we keep doing it- once that cycle time of three months has passed, from there on there should be out 2 heads being released every month.

What part of the process is international ? Why?

Great question. I've talked about this a lot but lord knows how quickly posts get buried. WGP is made up of two studio partners based in the US and the UK. I am the US half who runs things and ships orders from the US. My studio partner and our lead sculptior Sean is in the UK, so once the sculpts are printed in the US they are shipped to him in the UK to clean and prep for casting because when you 3D print it leaves stepping lines from printing. The US is where we get our best printing rates from- they can be astronomical, otherwise we'd get them done in the UK. Plus our guy knows what he's doing and doesn't have his head up his @ss. And that matters. Once cleaned, Sean ships them to one of two places, a UK caster or one of our US casters, depending on their availability. Each way across the pond is about a week and a half mail route. Then it is a matter of waiting on the caster to do them.

Trying to deviate from this, like getting someone to clean the heads for us to save time always ends up with us getting boned.

From the mailbag:

Did you ever get a go ahead for Deadwood's Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock?

Yup! We def will be doing them this year. I had wanted Raylen from Justified be done during this current season (which ends this Tues I believe-sniff!), so he is a little behind, but after two subcontracted artists not being able to start on him after he was assigned, my WGP partner Sean has been assigned him now (as of this morning, actually) and is one of his next heads for April.

I bring this up because once the two Olyphant Justified heads are done, that will be the base for a Bullock variant so the Olyphants will happen first!

And it happened a little late for my liking, but Justified HAS been renewed fro S5! :yess:

We changed it because we are literally getting to make 3 versions of Olyphant (though Bullock will be modded to have his crazy eyes). We are accepting $10 deposits already but they won't be required till the sculpt is shown to reserve your spot and we are getting ready to print. :)
