Re: Batman Begins Cowl - Because it's the cowl the Freaks deserve. SOLD OUT
Hello All,
So I will say up front this looks to be ending well. So with that, let’s talk about the not so good part.
I have wrestled a lot with whether or not to be this open about what has happened, but to say there is a “delay” without a real reason is no longer acceptable. Honestly though - for the painted pieces I have not had any real information to share to this point.
That being said…
Natchan and I are no longer doing this (or any future) project together.
“Is there any update on this?”
“When will these be finished?”
“Are these almost done?”
These are questions we have been getting from you all since this summer, and rightly so. Sadly we have not had the answers for you and were actually wondering the same things you were.
I finally found out this weekend why the prototype took so long and why the cowls were not done yet. I told you guys some months back why I did not take these to a factory - I wanted control of the product with someone I thought I could trust and to cut down on the risk of bootlegs. When I asked Nat to take this on at the first of this project he agreed and we settled on a price. He and his “team” were going to do them, 50-100 pieces, in about 4 weeks total once approved.
Well - as you all know there were a few months in delays on my side of things for mold issues and so on (all documented here), so it was several months later when I asked Nat about sending these on. When I asked if I could send them in early July I was told to do so.
I sent numerous emails simply asking for an update - they kept being un-replied to. Specifics about scheduling and sending additional cowls (I sent 50 in July and was going to send the rest once his team was working on these) were NEVER answered when I asked.
Long story short - and a string of accusations tossed at me later:
- Nat’s “team” is actually a factory (who and where is unknown to me)
- I was blamed for suddenly sending him the cowl kits and causing scheduling issues after being told to send them with no details about scheduling being disclosed to me.
- I was blamed for not issuing a PO when I was never told I should do so (because I was never told these were being produced through a factory).
- The original terms were a deposit (50%) and then the rest when finished - he suddenly changed it by demanding full payment up front as a “Gift” in Paypal without to my knowledge having done any work at all on the cowls beyond the paint sample.
- Numerous inquires and comments about sending additional cowls to complete the order were never - and to this day - answered.
- Because I was concerned about the durability of the paint, I asked a question about the black coat on the last paint prototype and it was never addressed.
- None of the prototypes had the cape clips on so I honestly don’t know if they were even being painted.
I politely asked last week if the project could be finished in the next 3 weeks and that is when this all went south. After that he said I was to blame for everything and the terms changed to the full payment as a gift as mentioned above. After things got bad I told him I need to cancel this project with him. It was only then he tells me I need to pay 50% of the total to get them back.
That was confusing so I asked if they were already painted or started on. He said no, but if I pay the deposit then they will start this week. Then I told him no and asked him to send the cowls back to me. After all of this was when I was informed that the factory (that was when I learned it was a factory and not a team of associates) are the ones requiring the deposit or they would destroy the cowls if I did not pay.
So for a batch of heads that supposedly have only had a paint sample done, they will only be returned to me if I pay 50%, or completed. Again only 50pcs with no option to complete the rest of the order. Because I did not agree to pay for something I never agreed to have done - the factory is supposedly going to destroy them.
This is all documented in emails and private messages.
So for not paying for something I never agreed to under these conditions, not being told there were specific terms up front, and not having my questions answered, my property - your casts -are going to be destroyed.
I have spent countless hours sanding and meeting with the caster to get these right. Hundreds of dollars spent on molds and casts - all being trash at some factory in China that I never even knew existed until last night. But I refuse to do business with anyone who is so dishonest and misleading. I take my work seriously and I value your trust as my buyers to support these projects.
So enough of that.
The solution!
I am actually in talks with a factory to complete this order. All of it together which it did not seem was going to happen. I did not want to break them up over two places so I can keep a consistency.
So why a factory now? While I never wanted to go to a factory with this piece, I now have no other options. This time I have actually met the factory owner and have first hand knowledge of the quality of his work. It’s not some mystery place or facility or a go between I am dealing with. I have seen his work in person and his ability to deliver on a schedule and to know the terms up front with full disclosure. With this owner, I feel confident that there will not be any recastings/bootlegs. I hope this is never an issue, but I think it’s wise to take the following precautions. The new cowls will have the cape clips as part of the cast, not separate as before. If there are any painted cowls that show up that were not private commissions and have the cape clips missing or separate, they ARE NOT official releases from me.
I wrote the factory owner today discussing my future projects and have now added this project to the que. Here, I can have the entire order completed and I know the terms and arrangement up front this time. The new paint sample will be prepared soon. Given the recentness of this situation I am still getting this finalized, but they will be producing the casts from the master. I have been told he can deliver in 3-4 weeks as soon as a paint master is approved.
I can vouch that he has delivered thousands of pieces on time.
I have lost sleep, my stomach has been in knots over this for you guys and now I’ve lost a lot of money and time, but I have and always will make a project right if it hits a snag or if the bottom falls out completely.
I was in talks with my new supplier for my future painted releases then this hit the fan so thank God for the timing of this so I had a plan “B” when I would not have had one.
I will update you more as I get information, which I am confident I will from here out.
