Huh, I didn't feel that way at all. Wire felt like a complete story told the way the creators wanted it told. Like a great, thick novel brought to life on TV. Seasons 4 and 5 were essential to the overall story, and I thought Marlo was great.

The Shield was good from start to finish. Vic was a badass, Shane was a screwup, Lem was a crybaby and Ronnie...well, what can be said about Ronnie other than he was "around" from time to time.

True, true, true but Lem was stand up and I still liked Ronnie cause when he was around, he was a team player.

One of my buds lent me the first season of The Wire and it sat with me for 3 months before he was like,"alright guy, time to pass it back." I was too busy watching s__t that I already saw 50 times, again :lol. But I know it's long overdue and I have to dig in.

Ok..I'll give you 4 as a way to complete the story, but 5? The whole serial killer thing!?! It was just to far off base IMO. My favorite characters were Bunk, Omar and Lester.

Just one more way McNulty and others tried to get things done in an environment where the powers that be weren't interested in addressing real issues on the street. That was one of the primary running themes through the series, and the ludicrous nature of the serial killer was the only reason it garnered media attention, and thus, political support. There were real serial killers all through the series that no one paid attention to because they were gangsters killing other gangsters.

That storyline also allowed the creators to explore issues of media sensationalism and the downfall of legitimate, objective news reporting, as season 4 explored the issues of a broken public school system.

Great post. While your explanation makes perfect sense and I agree with everything you said and I understand the point the writers were trying to make, but from purely an entertainment standpoint I thought it was a horrible way to end the series to what was a really good show. Just like Sopranos, great show, but weak final season IMO.

Side thought: are spoiler tags necessary on a show that is over four years old since wrapping up?? Just a thought.

...I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time I remember the first couple of episodes, thinking it was just another cops n'robbers show. Then the story arcs started developing and the rich textures of the show began to emerge. Oh man. That was a fine series. And the scene with Bunk and McNulty piecing together the murder in the apartment remains my favourite scene of all time.

Anyhoo, sorry to go off topic. As much as I loved the show, the only character I'd pick up would be Omar. And Bubbles, complete with shopping cart fulla crap.
