The balsa is surprisingly easy to cut and shape and knocking the edges off with a knife makes the wood look old and well aged. 000 Steel wool smooths out the cut marks. Then i used a wipe on satin poly to seal the balsa before applying the stain (it soaks up too much stain otherwise). If you seal it first, the stain kinda sits on the wood for a while before it dries which lets you wipe it off gradually with a damp cloth to get the colour how you want it. Use pliers to trim down sewing pins to the length you need for each nail. The pins just push straight through the balsa and holds it all together while the glue dries.
