Re: Once Upon a Time in the West Frank - PROJECT FINISHED

With Frank and Harmonica here, deadwood on the way and a whole heap of western outfits coming from Battlegear toys for some more bashes I've been thinking about western dioramas.
I started making a 1/6 scale gallows out of balsa wood and wanted to share some WIP pics with fellow western fans. I've never messed with balsa wood before but it's great stuff. Easy to shape and stain, and pins work really well for nails and just push straight into the wood.
I saw some pics of a balsa gallows online and tried to copy the design as much as possible and just convert it to 1/6 scale, so I can't take any credit for the design.
Here's where I'm at:

Very nice SJ2! Weathering looks spot on...

Re: Once Upon a Time in the West Frank - PROJECT FINISHED

Thanks guys, glad you like it.
If you want to try it i'm happy to help with advice.
The balsa is surprisingly easy to cut and shape and knocking the edges off with a knife makes the wood look old and well aged. 000 Steel wool smooths out the cut marks. Then i used a wipe on satin poly to seal the balsa before applying the stain (it soaks up too much stain otherwise). If you seal it first, the stain kinda sits on the wood for a while before it dries which lets you wipe it off gradually with a damp cloth to get the colour how you want it. Use pliers to trim down sewing pins to the length you need for each nail. The pins just push straight through the balsa and holds it all together while the glue dries.

Excellent diorama SteveJack! Now we just need a Steve McQueen 'Tom Horn'!
