If you watch the extra features on the Blueray they say it was written in the script to be diamonds.

The answer is right in the special features of the Blu Ray?!?!? :slap I have to look into that. I've heard the Marcellus soul story (which I now forget the details) years ago. After all of these years I never did a lot of research on what it was supposed to be. I always liked the mystery behind it.

I can't make out what we're looking at in one of the reference pics in your first post. It almost looks like a mirror at the top od the inside of the case and in the reflection are bags of diamonds.
