Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

The plugs are a great idea and if these were molded plastic it'd work perfectly but because of the way I make these and what they're made out of its just not feasible.
I'd love to be able to cover a post hole when not needed but plugging it probably isn't the best way to do it. There's gotta be something that can be done though.

What about small rocks to cover unused holes? Would add to the theme.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

I wouldn't want either of those options and for the same reason. My detolfs are on a second floor so they are prone to slight wooble from people walking up and down the stairs and around the top floor. I think the reason Ikea makes the shelves a little smaller isn't to allow give for a faulty build (none of their other products do this) but because when you get a slight wooble, the glass bashes together. Making the shelves a bit smaller prevents this. For the same reason I wouldn't want a base that goes all the way to the side as it will bash when the detolf woobles. And again for the same reason, figure stands are a must in my display. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue.

The reason why I think a little space around the base is a good idea is that unless you have the same style of base for all the shelves, it might look a little out of place. That peek of glass (I like the 1/4" idea better than mine) gives a feeling of consistency and I think would look classy. But that's just me and everyone has their own preferences.

I also agree. I wouldn't want it right to the edges and touching the glass cabinet. I think either the exact size as a glass shelf so as to be able to remove the glass shelf and just insert the base would look very nice, or just smaller as to leave the glass shelf and have it look like a stand instead of the whole shelf would look great. The only thing I'd be worried about is the weight of the stand itself then the added weight of what items are then placed on it and then put on top of the glass shelf. Glass makes me nervous and I've never felt comfortable putting anything heavy in there. Always afraid of the domino effect. If one shelf broke it all comes tumbling down!! :gah:

Great points. You're definitely right about the wobble. Makes more sense now that I think of it. It takes a while but once you get the plate in the right spot it completely eliminates the shelf clanging, this also has to do with how you tighten the walls and adjust them and also how much your floors give. I get no clanging now and the figures free stand no problem. The 1/4" idea may be the way to go. Or the full glass shelf size may be the right choice. I think how it looks depends on the thickness of the design plates and overall design / how it looks on the shelf. But yeah all my figures free stand. I feel like once they are on a single base with a crotch grabber they look more like mannequins, if they are free standing in action poses they look more like shrunken down real life. I use sticky tack and the weight of the figure to balance them. Once in a while a tusken raider falls over, but other than that it's great haha.

If the option to have these plates without those peg holdes for the posts, that would be amazing!

Glass is very strong. Especially these detolf glass shelves. They are great quality not flimsy at all. Some people display up to five figures a shelf hahaha. I keep a limit of 3. But if these design plates are some sort of light weight plastic or something ( I don't know his technique whether it's 3d printed and painted or? ) but as long as they aren't super thick and heavy it should be fine!

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

That would be your best bet right there. Possibly even a removable sand drift.

How are they made? if it's 3D printed maybe those areas could be done in thinner material so they can be "punched out" where the posts can be added, or just kept closed.

Am I the only one who doesn't use stands? I feel like almost all the photos I look at people don't use stands. Maybe a poll of stands vs no stands. I know evilface, chaka, tonton, galactiboy, invictus, many others post their photos of the figure freestanding? Unless that's just momentarily? All my figures do great standing on their own. But then again I don't own any older figures with weak joints.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

I use wood based products for the bases, nothing is 3D printed. I wouldn't say they're overly heavy but there's more heft to them than a plastic HT base.

As far as too much weight for a Detolf glass shelf goes, one thing to keep in mind is that a full dio base, or one 1/4"shy of that, will have a thin felt dot placed at each corner meaning the weight of the base plus anything on it actually gets distributed to those corners which are directly over the metal rods that support the shelf. In essence it removes the possibility of glass breakage due to weight since the only areas of glass receiving the weight are those resting on a support rod and not able to flex under load.

Hey Coco,

Here is a link to TwelveInchFigures. He does awesome custom backgrounds/bases for Detolfs. I've bought a couple of sets from him, great guy to deal with. Hopefully he can share some insight on the exact dimensions he uses for his work, hope that helps.

I'm not trying to take business away from anyone just trying to share different ideas to help all of us out. The majority of collectors display their figures in Detolfs or Bestas anyways and were always looking for ways to improve our displays.

Thanks

Yeah, he's got some great background displays for sure. Between JC and momaw I've got the dimensions all set for the base though. We just need to work out post locations for those that want support posts in them.

Pretty cool. That guy does a killer job with his artwork. But the difference is TwelveInchFigures makes posters. Technically any of us could print out some cool looking stuff and lay it down or backdrop it. The difference is Cocoboloboy is creating a physical base environment like the ones the figures come with, but larger. From what I've seen of his excellent sand bases, I can easily see cool display options for Sandtroopers or Tatooine Luke / Kenobi / Jawas / Droids / Tuskens... then snow bases could cover the Hoth figures and snow troops, and if in some miracle type fashion he can figure out the imperial style grates similar to what Hot Toys provides, that would be a slam dunk for all troops, imperials, bounty hunters etc. It's far more advanced then just printed out images. Not to take away from that guy, still really cool option and cheaper. But this is a whole other level ;)

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

Yeah, he's got some great background displays for sure. Between JC and momaw I've got the dimensions all set for the base though. We just need to work out post locations for those that want support posts in them.

The post locations are going to be tricky because everyone displays differently. Some display two figures side by side, or one slightly more in front. Others do two in the back and one front and center. And some people do single figures centered. Or random action poses?! That's going to be a nightmare to try and generalize into a single offering! I think you have to figure out something more universal. Maybe offer a special base receiver that the standard crotch grabber rod can slide into and it can be the color of whatever the base plate design is to not take away from the design, and have it with a magnet bottom where they can be moved around with a sliding under-plate magnet holding it in place? There are some super strong rare earth magnets. Or just Industrial strength Velcro? Sticky Tack? I dunno. Personally I would nix the extra effort and let people figure it out for themselves haha. I know people rely on the crotch grabbers, but everyone displays differently. Probably wont take much for someone to dremmel in a area where they want to stick their post and just stick them where they want them themselves! I know I wouldn't have a problem with that if I really liked the base plate designs.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

What I'll probably end up doing, if these are of interest to people, is offering 4 or 5 different bases each with a different post position as well as one without any post holes. Maybe that would be enough variety to suit most needs. Like I mentioned before if you turn the plate 180 degrees then you end up with a different layout...sort of. :D So you'd at least have two choices per base. The removable sand drifts are another viable option in order to put more post holes in a base but be able to cover them when not in use.

On another note here's a couple dual base designs.

JC............. I just posted a quick link for Coco to reference on trying to get the exact measurments for the detolfs. Coco mentioned earlier that he didnt own any detolfs, so I figured why not ask a fellow member whose been doing this for awhile on measurments, thats all. Both do excellent custom work and its great to have different display options. Cant wait to see what the final product is.....

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

Thanks Coco for the sand base looks awesome. Will get to the shelves later on in the week. Awesome work. Sorry for the crappy photos but looks way better in hand.

Sorry, I haven't been able to do anything on the Detolf shelf yet. I reinjured my back last week and have been down for a while so that's why I haven't posted anything about it.

I've got a few more bases boxed up and will be shipping some out today and tomorrow.

If you've paid last week or earlier and haven't gotten yours yet just send me a pm so I don't overlook you. Thanks, guys!

Get well soon!
