Got my C3PO / R2D2 stand yesterday and it's fantastic. Really a work of art. Much better than the pictures show. Keep up the great work. There's a need for what you're doing.

Can't wait to see the detolf sand base. Great idea.

I am thinking about getting these.... And awesome job with them. How heavy are these?

I can't find who asked about quantity discounts but, yes, depending on the quantity I can definitely offer a multi-stand discount

The Singles are around 8 to 10 ounces I believe and the droid stand is around a pound. I'll weigh them later and get you an exact number.

Heh Coco, any idea when the next batch is being mailed out? Thanks!!

I just mailed out three sand bases today and will be mailing out a batch of black bases Thursday or Friday. Yours will be one of those.

Re: STAR WARS Sand Base for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

That's a great idea! :rock So great that momaw and I are already working on it. :wink1:

I don't have a Detolf but he approached me about doing one so I got the dimensions from him and just need to hash out post positions. I'm looking forward to getting one done. I might give you a discount for being in the "great minds think alike" club. :lol

WHAT AN AMAZING IDEA.

If you do move forward with this... PLEASE consider doing the Steel grate style (Hot Toys stand style, red and grey versions etc) a snow and a sand shelf plate. I would buy one for every shelf and I have 4 detolfs. That's 16 plates. And I want to get two more detolfs. Seriously these should fly like hot cakes, I'd even put them on ebay with all the collectors out there... amazing idea. I salute you, sir!

Thanks, JC! I'd love to do a variety for detolfs if they'd be something collectors would want.

Quick question for you since you own some. I got measurements from momaw but I'm curious if yours are the same size. Would you mind measuring what size plate would fit in yours, the depth and width, please?

For context, I measured the size of the floating glass shelf which is smaller than the actual interior dimension of a detolf (so the glass doesn't rattle against the sides).

I recommended shaving about an inch off the glass shelf dimensions but would be interested in what others think.

Are all these detolfs the same dimension inside or could JC's be different than yours? I was just curious if they varied.

There are actually three dimensions you could do. The easiest and least complicated for a perfect square plate would be the exact glass shelf size. For me, and likely Momaw and others that own the ikea detolf, that is 11 1/4" deep by 15" wide.

You could also do the full depth of the shelf, which should be just a touch under 13" deep by 15 1/4" wide, but then you would have to have corner cut-outs to allow for the metal shelf rods to pass through.

Or you could do just up to the full inside of the rods which would be just a touch under 12" deep and 15 1/4" wide.

Not sure which makes most sense for you design wise, but personally having built several of these detolfs I know that when you construct them sometimes depending on how you tighten the bolts or the surface you're building on (pitch etc) the glass walls can twist ever so slightly causing the shelves to not always sit flush. I think Ikea played it safe by specifically making the glass shelf plates a small size that doesn't completely fill the area inside the detolf to compensate for this warping effect you can get, making sure the shelves would work regardless. Anyone who put a detolf together will probably echo this, of course you can adjust this by tightening the corner rod bolts and continuing to play around with it, but it's good to know. Your safest bet may be to just build the exact size of the glass shelves. 11 1/4" x 15"

cheers

all detolf sizing is identical. All shelf glass plates are the exac tsame. The only difference is how it may sit in the detolf shelf itself. Sometimes you get some every so slight (not noticeable to the eye) warping that the shelf can be uneven and requires you to play around with tightening or loosening the bolts that hold the walls until eventually the plate sits flat. Like I said in my other post, I think Ikea decided on this smaller plate size to allow people to make these adjustments and get the shelf to fit.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

My only note... is that on the very bottom shelf where you have the wood finish, it may not look as nice with the plate only covering the glass shelf size, keeping exposed the wood finish around it. It may look or may make you wish it filled the whole space with cutouts in the corner for the rods. A prototype placed at the bottom shelf should let you know right away.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

Thank you so much for the in depth explanation and the pics, JC! :rock That's awesome! I know exactly what direction I'm going to go with these now.

Momaw suggested taking an inch off the shelf measurement and, like you mentioned, others may want the full shelf width and depth covered. Going beyond that might look a little odd with having to cut around the support rods and possible warped glass getting in the way so I probably wouldn't even try that.

If it were something I was doing for myself I'd want as much surface area as I can get for the environment base but still look as if it was sitting on the glass shelf. For that I would take the glass shelf dimension and deduct 1/2" from the width and depth so that a 1/4" reveal is left around the base. Momaw's 1/2" reveal would look good too.

Now the big question is where to place the figure holders. You could at least get two different positions out of one shelf by turning it 180 degrees as long as the front and back figure positions are different.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

Right on, glad I could help.

I'm happy with whatever you come up with! But just to ping pong a little, why take more off of the glass shelf size? That's already a safe size within the cabinet with ample play space between the glass walls. You could actually have it slip OVER the glass shelf plate as oppose to sitting on it, for a more flush look and less movement/sliding of the display plate. Just a thought!

Another thing to consider is the type of display people do. I, like some others, don't use figure holders. I let my figures stand on their own in their own poses to give them more life. So I'd prefer just the environment base with not posts / hole for posts. Don't know if the posts are something you add in afterwards, but if there is an option to leave them out I would be on board for that boat!

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

I guess in my mind leaving a little glass showing is for ascetics. I assumed that's why momaw suggested it but really it's a matter of taste. I'd like to make some the same size as the glass too and have some pics posted.

As far as the posts go I can definitely leave them out if they're not needed. I worry that the uneven surface of the desert base might make the figures unstable but that may not be the case. Regardless, it's good to know they may not be needed all the time.

Re: STAR WARS Tatooine Stand for C-3PO & R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Luke

Coco. Would it be possible to have the post holes cut in 5 or 6 prime locations with the option of "sand plugs" for any post holes not used? I would think 3 maybe 4 posts is all that would ever be used at once, but the 2 or 3 not used due to posing options could be covered.

The plugs are a great idea and if these were molded plastic it'd work perfectly but because of the way I make these and what they're made out of its just not feasible.
I'd love to be able to cover a post hole when not needed but plugging it probably isn't the best way to do it. There's gotta be something that can be done though.

I wouldn't want either of those options and for the same reason. My detolfs are on a second floor so they are prone to slight wooble from people walking up and down the stairs and around the top floor. I think the reason Ikea makes the shelves a little smaller isn't to allow give for a faulty build (none of their other products do this) but because when you get a slight wooble, the glass bashes together. Making the shelves a bit smaller prevents this. For the same reason I wouldn't want a base that goes all the way to the side as it will bash when the detolf woobles. And again for the same reason, figure stands are a must in my display. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue.

The reason why I think a little space around the base is a good idea is that unless you have the same style of base for all the shelves, it might look a little out of place. That peek of glass (I like the 1/4" idea better than mine) gives a feeling of consistency and I think would look classy. But that's just me and everyone has their own preferences.
