art
noun
1. the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

By definition the dolls we see here in the custom area is art.

Custom figures are not the only thing to be considered art. I know many people who do package design for hasbro. They are artists first and foremost. The people that do that work are incredible. The mass produced figure makers are absolutely artists as well. Debating figures on whether they are art or not is silliness really. Basically what is being said here cheapens custom work to being nothing more special than a mass produced toy.

So all that being said.... I will be ordering this sculpt soon! I am pumped for the bill sculpt.

BUSINESS:

1. An organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial or professional activities. A business can be a for-profit entity, such as a publicly-traded corporation, or a non-profit organization engaged in business activities, such as an agricultural cooperative.

2. Any commercial, industrial or professional activity undertaken by an individual or a group.

3. A reference to a specific area or type of economic activity.

By definition, what were doing here is business!:)

And if you do business, you have to abide by the rules of business: seller, buyer and ( fair or unfair) competition. And since you really want it to be art, then I'll remind you that art counterfeiting has always existed. You even had students signing for their masters!:)

Just educate anyone who doesn't know. There are more art forms other than one off sculpture and painting. Working in a series is pretty common. One of the most recognizable that applies directly to this hobby would be Auguste Rodin. Like almost all sculptors who work in bronze, they make a run. Meaning they sculpt one in clay and have it reproduced in a limited number of bronze pieces.

Also most of the famous artists throughout history have been commission based artists(all four turtles). Meaning a wealthy patron wants something made and hires them to make it. Almost every painting that has to do with religion hanging in almost every famous museum in world was commissioned by the different churches. To say they are not emotionally invested means you don't understand how most artists work. Most artists want to work in their areas and hope to get paid for it. The act of making art is often the motivation of the artist.

We live in one capitalist world, the way u speak appears its wrong artist gain money with their job, as long as i know, artists have bills to pay and want buy everything other people want buy or make like a trip for example.

Not saying the contrary...:dunno

Art and business go together. The only debate is is this art or not? Some think it is, I don't, that's all. Just a point of view as I said...

As for the recasts, what can I say, yes, it is unfair but my saying so won't change anything, so what else do you want me to say? That I won't buy a recast? I could lie and tell you I won't, ever again, but what good would that be? Art, possibly, business definitely!:devil

No,no, on the contrary, I'm a harsh capitalist! But industrial espionage and copying is just part of it. Capitalism is about making money and buying cheap. I'm just sad that my hobby isn't more... I don't know... Less about money and more about solidarity and helping each other. But what can I say , I'm a naive guy.

How long is this thread going to be clogged up by this?

Anyone that says this isn't art are ignorant of the skill it takes. What I could draw on paper some people can sculpt and make it real, something you can hold and touch. Both are art forms, neither more or less than the other.

So if this head sculpt that has been sculpted and painted by an artist isn't art then what do u think it is then? :huh

I even think Hot Toy's figures are art but they are just not original artworks but PVC copies of the original Resin prototype sculpts. Also what jra81984 said is correct to even hasbro figures can be considered art maybe not high quality art like this sculpt and Hot Toys but still art. The thing that distinguishes Hot Toys or Hasbro from customs is not whether or not that either is art but rather which one out of the three is the original handmade sculpt and thus, is something made from the original artist and not something that has been mass produced from the original sculpt as in the case of Hasbro and Hot Toys. So both customs and toy companies produce art but the art toy companies produce are copies from the original source.

trolls be trolling.

I could reply to that, but I'd just be insulting you back!:)

If having diverging opinion is trolling, welcome to your own private dictatorship then!

Guys!!! Do what you want! Buy what you want! Think what you want! In the end I don't give a ****! It was just for the sake of arguing! If it's not allowed, or if we should all share the same opinion, keep this thread to yourself! You'll feel better!:)

If you want to argue that mass-produced items are not art… i can see that. But to say that custom works are not art is ignorant of the countless hours that these ARTISTS put into their craft. It's insulting quite frankly.

Thanks robbie. Decent addition to the convo, prints and multiples.

Okay, now that 16K has publicly advertised his 2 cent regarding his thoughts on recast and what is art and have received responses, can we get back to the topic now. Thanks :wave

I still want to see what the Interrogation paint up looks like in hand

and 16K, you sound set in your ways. You want your hobby to be back how things used to be, less expensive. I don't blame you, if I was getting 40$ original Trevor casts I'd be stoked. The markets changed, the landscapes changed, grow up, move on. No one wants to hear about the good old days and how bitter you are that artists get paid for their hard work. Maybe you don't consider custom work art because you're a crappy artist :dunno. It's insulting to the artists who design, sculpt, paint original pieces.

Has anyone got an interigation paintup yet?did he do mob paintup first then interigation or did everyone who got interigation opt for no hair pieces?im curious to see one in hand.

I've decided to keep mine, even though I haven't received it yet. So it's back to plan A again - this head with the bank robber 2.0 body and outfit. :rock

Looking forward to receive this, MJ :rock
