I know but the secondary market has always existed .. plus there's more demand plus there is market. I'm okay, if you want the original, and you have the money to spend you buy the original.
but in this case you'll ever buy a recast because the original is the one that was carved (there the price would be justified), so why sell a recast to $ 300?

recasters have seen the gain because the artists have begun to raise the prices soar (hot toys enterbay included)

I'm sorry but there will always be recaster ..
they have found a way to play and go forward on their way .. is a parallel market ..
you must know also famous tailors have their own secondary market ..
example:Cavalli. Prada, ecc. sell at the price they want their clothes ok? but also sells the same clothes with a quality a little worse (and a very low cost labor) for a secondary market .. they know that and is another source of income ..

who are unaware that the costs are much lower for them especially when you have a staff available who works for you ..
labor in China is at a very low cost

or you thought that the "artist" would begin to make heads or clothes one by one alone?

maybe you did not know
Who the artist chooses to work with is their decision, that they are entitled to. If they outsource casting, that's fine. If they don't, that's fine as well. If they want to charge huge markups, that's also their prerogative. Whether or not the counterfeiter (recaster) charges a lot more than their cost is neither here nor there in my mind, as the simple decision to sell without permission is where the real ethical breach occurs.

And I do agree that recasting is inevitable, but that's not an excuse to promote or justify it.

I'm curious how this will affect stores like Cotswold and Monkey Depot. This head is being offered to dealers here in the States, so I'm curious if anyone is planning on boycotting or otherwise voicing their displeasure if any dealers here in the US carry this head.

So Axe, i'm not sure if i missed out something, but have you had the chance to talk to MJ because of that upper lip paint?
I've paid for the interrogation sculpt and while waiting for my sculpt, i would like to know if there are any new infos out yet.
And I'm actually worrying, as i don't want to have my sculpt with that makeup over his lips

Axe answered it a while ago:

About the paint... you will notice them in macro shots like that.. honestly that colour bleed over the lips is hardly noticeable on display unless you take pics of it on macro. However I have asked the artist to ensure that since everyone needs that kind of detail fixed he take more care with it.

well I think if you don't pay for a licence a pricey head is not justified..maybe is this what he means..
if you try to think...
eleven and ace toys make heads..they are amazing, they are painted already
and the price is about $30, for which reason?
What reason? Let me break down cost for you...

The artist is one who works for industry collectible companies... a LOT of different companies use him for making their prototype sculpts. This is his first offering in the personal custom market
You are asking price of ELeven and ACE Toys.

Do you know they are Injection Mould PVC?? Not resin. Production process for both is different. ACE Toys and all have a staff and are chinese companies who have control over production as much as a mass produced company.

Here the artist has to cast and clean every sculpt on his own. Then hand paint on his own.

Please go and check how much that will cost in Korea. In term of labour charges.

Mass produced collectibles are painted mostly by machine using dot matrix templates. If the artist had a factory and a staff and initial capital he could make mass productions and offer these sculpts in prices like that you mentioned

The production of these unauthorised mass productions as you call it are done with factories who need to keep on producing on short term contracts to keep the rolling investments going.

Understand the specifics of why costs are different before making judgemental quotations.

The fact that one person has to work behind it is also a reason why too many orders dont want to be taken then the artist has to keep revisiting for every order which will affect his professional life.

thanks for the clarification axe..
is hard to beleive but..
I didn't know mj choi didn't have a staff to help him I thought there was the usual group of people to do the work...

is usually so in all cases

The only one helping him out with this is me. I look after the orders, listings, payment verifications and everything else. From sculpting to producing its a heavy load. He started out very excited with the project but this is not his day job and this one project has taken a big toll on him not taking in account recasters using his sculpt. He can only work on the production on weekends as on weekdays he has his professional commitments to attend to. He mentions he may not take orders or do these anymore as it has meant he has not had free weekends since the last 6 months almost since he started sculpting this.

From now if he does do work itll be even smaller runs and more limited production because he says the cast cleaning itself is tedious due to the nature of the sculpt's hair.

Guaranteed there wouldn't have been half this trouble and fuss if it wasn't Ledger Joker.

Yeah, I did tell him that he got his work recasted because of the character, I doubt his DDL Bill will be recasted. Not many will even have access to clothing to bash the rest of the character.

u are doing good brother... hang in there... we know this was not easy for you... and for the artist...
